Hello,

I am having this very same problem when using Akamai client. I am now trying to use http download as suggested: Result is

Service Unavailable - Zero size object

The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.

Reference #15.c61bf9c3.1352189574.44aa149

Tried both with ie and chrome.

There is currently no workaround?

Here is the Download manager window where trying to resume download using the desktop link.

Note the "null Download Manger". Win764bit prof. Ie 9.0.8112.16421 Update 9.0.10

The above error won't appear if you try to download again. Please do try and let us know.

Pekka Kilponen, Use Mozilla Firefox or google chrome to download any msdn subscribed software. In IE it will ask you to install the Akamai DLM.

It pains me to say this as a devout IE user, but Chrome got me past this same issue.
Direct download of Win8 ISO (MSDN Subscriber Download) on the first try;
no messing with our firewall or proxy.  No DLM, direct file transfer.
Chrome Version 22.0.1229.79 m, on Win7Pro x64.

Problem solved.

In the Sonicwall under Security Services / Gateway Anti-Virus / Configure Gateway AV Settings I checked "Enable HTTP Byte-Range requests with Gateway AV". Akamai DLM now functions.

Is there any way to always use the Microsoft File Transfer Manager as it does not seem to need this capability?  I suspect this setting sacrifices some security.

Seperately, the akamai DLM should clearly indicate why is fails.

Glad to hear DaleWood!  I still want others to reply here with this issue because I want to know what other possible proxy settings/authentication schemes are supported and not supported.  I'm contacting the Akamai team about this among other things.

There is not a way to always use the FTM, unfortunately the system is limited to one download manager per file basis.   We will be transferring these files back to the FTM as demand dies down in the near future, but I don't have any exact dates for this yet.

Thanks,
Mike

Dear DaleWood,

I know it would be frustrating - can you please post the screenshot of the error message and your solution in the following thread as Mike is looking after this situation. So that it would be easy for him to assist you better and come back with a solution.

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msdnfeedback/thread/d2443616-a233-4a01-8774-1e906b5e6659

In the mean time - make sure that you are following these:

1. Open IE as an Administrator and enable all relevant ActiveX controls and allow them to install if asked.

2. Try to download the ISO in a Virtual Machine where you only have a clean OS but nothing installed, like External Firewall, AV etc.,

3. Can you try downloading another language of the same edition. If that works fine please post that screenshot.

4. In some weeks time everyone should be able to Download Windows 8 through Microsoft FTM.

prathaprabhu

Thank you for the troubleshooting links.

I had seen them many times before and they did not solve the problem.  Two of the links seem to refer to the Microsoft File Transfer Manager which already works.

I sure did not see any indication of an automatic redirection, just failure.   If automatic redirection occurred, sure seems like the ISO would have downloaded.

It is a shame that Microsoft is moving toward the Akamai DM when so many people are encountering errors and are not provided descriptive and useful error information/condition.

Dear DaleWood,

In my expereince I have tried downloading all editions Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise from all languages. Only some of them are reported to have an issue with downloading using Akamai DM. Whichever ISO is having problem downloading from Akamai DM will be automatically redirected to download from Microsoft FTM. Also, there is no option that you can customize which Download Manager that you can use to download the ISO. Because, Akamai DM is used whenever Microsoft releases new product it can download 15 files simultaneously more than that will be automatically paused.

Checkout the following links for troubleshooting info

Thank you for starting an 'official' thread on this issue.

-----------

Settings for Active X are enabled.

If I try from another location, actually my same Internet connection but going through another router (simple Netgear) and using a laptop, yes the download will work (please note that getting a laptop out to download from Microsoft is not an idea situation).

We do not have a proxy server nor is proxy enabled within Internet explorer.  See image below.

------------

Our primary router is a Sonicwall with Antivirus/Antispyware/Intrusion Protection services (i.e. data packets are scanned as it flows through the router).  Even if I disable all these services the Akamai DLM will not function.

Is there any way to cause the Microsoft File Transfer Manager to be used when downloading Windows 8?

Thanks for this post DaleWood, I only changed the title very slightly to add that the issue you're having is with the Akamai DLM.    We've started a discussion with the Akamai team about a variety of problems that have been reported, and I'd like to use this thread specifically for people that report the error you did, seeing the 'download was halted before completion' error.

i'm going to ask for some more information from you, but I want you to confirm that your IE settings mirror those shown on this help page:
http://www.akamai.com/html/misc/akamai_client/dlmv2_tr.html, particularly the sectioned titled "Enabling Active X on Windows "

also have you tried this download from another location? We get many suggestions back from Akamai that proxy authentication is a likely cause of issues like yours, and this would be a way to bypass proxy issues.    (though others also report that proxy problems aren't the underlying cause).

Thanks,

Mike

I would like to join the crowd that I cannot download Windows 8 Pro from MSDN.  The error in the title says it all.  This occurs almost immedately after attempting the download and happens under Windows 7 64-bit or Windows Vista 64-bit using IE 9 32-bit.  We have no proxy server and the Windows 7 install is nearly "clean" or no other programs are installed.

The first response for folks reporting this issue is to reference several KB trouble-shooting articles.  Looked at all of them and nothing helps.

I can download a Windows 7 iso with no problem.  Two images below show what works and what does not.

Is there anyway to always use the Microsoft File Transfer Manager which works?

Thank you...

Update 8/31:

Folks, we've been engaging the Akamai team and they have some thoughts about the ongoing causes of this problem.   The Akamai download manager does byte range requests for certain files, and as DaleWood found, enabling settings related to Byte-Range requests on his proxy server/router.

To help investigate, What they need from us, and therefore what I need from you to address this issue, is:

1) Make a new download attempt and note the file that you're downloading, whatversion of IE and version of Windows you're on,time (and timezone) that you began the download. If the transfer fails again just like in the screenshot above:

2) Identify your DNS IP address by navigating to: http://www.damia.com/whatismydns/

3) Identify your external IP address by navigating to:http://whatismyip.akamai.com

4) Email sbpfdbk at microsoft dot com with the information from steps 1, 2, and 3 above, and put "Akamai Download Halted" in the subject of your email.

Update 10/26:

We have completed some investigation efforts and are working on some solutions that will help everyone.  Unfortunately they wont be implemented immediately, but we'll be moving out of development and into the testing phase soon.  I'll update here when they're live.

Right now, if you're having this issue with Akamai, the work around is to try a straight http download rather than use the Akamai dlm.  We've set up the site so that a straight http download will come from Firefox, Chrome, or other browsers, so this is what we recommend.

Thanks,
Mike

NOTE: If you are having a different problem with Akamai, please visit the appropriate thread for guidance:

- If the download manager never appears at all, instead please visit this thread.

- If you are able to see the download manager, but it gives you a Fatal Error at 99% please visit this thread.
